Hi,

I have been having issues with my computer and can't get it to
boot up. I've already tried to start it in safe mode and I tried using the
factory boot disk; neither one works. I decided to format the C drive and
reload windows, but I can't figure out how to format the C drive, I've
already tried standard format C:/ command at the DOS prompt.

My computer is operating off Windows XP. When I try to format the C drive,
it comes up with this:

FORMAT [/help] drive: [/F: size] [/N: sectors /T: tracks] [/1] [/4] [/8]

[/A] [[/B : /S]] [/Q] [/V [Label]].

Any idea of what I should type in to format the C drive and what the info
above means?

Thanks in advance. My parents won't let me on their computer and told me I
had to fix mine.

If you have decided to go ahead and reinstall the OS, you will be offered
the option of formatting the drive during the installation process.

The syntax you are using is wrong. The trailing forward slash (/) should
have been a back slash (\). But you really don't need anything else after
the C:

Type in:

format C:

and that should do it.

xp will not allow you to do that to the c: drive from within windows
like win 98 did . it will only give you a error " not a valid command "
or whatever it says if done from dos prompt before booting in to windows .
you can go to the command prompt and type in diskpart but i have never
done it and i think you may have to use list disk first to list the drives .

Super fdisk or partiton magic . makes life easy

i just happen to be a master at reloading windows . Not that i have to
do all the damn time because i just can not stop loading all kinds of
crap ware just to check it out .

Any way , xp has no uninstall so that is out . The best way to get rid
of windows problems is of coarse to wipe the partition and start over .
If you try and reinstall without doing it you will end up with a mess
that takes up a lot of room and nothing much will change .

to format it use partition magic or something else good to wipe the
partition . then toss in the xp disc and use that to format . You will
need to go through the motions . i.e. what do you want to do? create a
primary partition in the non partitioned space . Make sure it is the C:
drive .
Then format the partition ntfs.
ten install win in the primary partition.

I use super fdisk to wipe the partitions. it is fast and easy .
some free ones like easeus (which is where you get super fdisk from ? )
screw it up. you end up with a d or e drive instead of c: Kind of a pain
in the ass.

Super fdisk bootable iso http://www.ptdd.com/manual2.htm
real easy .
